Have you ever dreamt of seeing the Aurora Borealis?

Watching the northern lights dance across the sky on a cold, clear winter night is an unforgettable experience. Sometimes these dancing curtains will transform into a kaleidoscope of hues, as shades of pinks and reds, and sometimes even purples or blues transform the dark sky into a moving piece of multi-colored art.

2024, it turns out, will be an incredible time to see the aurora. And in today’s newsletter we’ll look at where you need to go, and when, if you want to make this the year you see this incredible display of nature.

Also, we’ll look at the very coldest places at the planet, get some advice on fighting sharks from Bear Grylls, and debate which is the better national park: Rocky Mountain or Glacier.

2024 Will Be The Best Time In a While To See the Northern Lights

Solar maximum is the period of highest solar activity during the approximately 11-year solar cycle, and scientists believe it will likely peak sometime in 2024. Since the aurora borealis is driven by solar activity, created when charged particles from the sun interact with Earth’s atmosphere, solar maximum is a fantastic time to go aurora watching.

You’ll need a dark, clear night sky to see the aurora, and be prepared to stay up late, since the late night and wee morning hours (often between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.) offer prime viewing opportunities. Here’s where to see the northern lights in the coming year.

Together with Inside Hotels

Hotels We Love: AWOL Kennebunkport

Nestled in a cozy pine grove, AWOL Kennebunkport is an intimate property along the coast of Southern Maine, just a block away from the ocean. There’s plenty to do in this quaint New England town, between restaurants serving up the seafood the region is famous for and small shops selling locally-made goods. Each room at the hotel is carefully decorated but unfussy, offering a casual experience with a high-end vibe. Most rooms even have fireplaces, perfect for cozying up after a long winter’s day by the sea.
