Good morning.

When you think of endurance events, your mind probably goes to ultra marathoners running 50-mile races over the course of an average workday. But Alabama is home to an even more extreme event that pits paddlers against 650 miles of challenging waters nonstop for 10 days. Heading into its fifth year, the Great Alabama 650 is the longest paddle race in the U.S. and one of the toughest events for elite athletes in the world.

In this edition of the Outdoors newsletter, we catch up with the race’s director for a preview of this year’s event.

Plus, we look at some great off-beat stops along the Appalachian Trail as well as five plants every forager should know.

And, get all the details on how you can rent out Shrek’s new Scottish Airbnb.

Don’t Miss These 8 Unique Towns and Pit Stops Along the Appalachian Trail

Many hikers embark on the Appalachian Trail (AT) to escape the throes of society. When one does heed that call of the wild, though, another type of yearning begins to set in—a yearning for diners, mattresses, and modern plumbing.

When it’s time to take a break from the trail—or plan your next adventure—here are eight of the AT’s most memorable pit stops, from a tiny Bavarian village to a drive-in movie theater that doubles as a campground.

Edible Plants Every Forager Should Know

Wild edible plants are nature’s survival kit. In the heart of the wilderness or even amidst urban jungles, nature offers a bounty of hidden treasures that can sustain us when all else fails. Wild plants provide sustenance, nutrition, and offer the opportunity to deepen our connection with Mother Earth.

Learning to identify wild plants is a survival skill worth acquiring. When foraging for wild plants, it’s essential to be absolutely certain of the plant’s identity, as some edible plants have poisonous look-alikes. Always consult a reliable field guide or learn from an experienced forager before consuming wild plants. Additionally, always perform an edibility test in matters of survival and otherwise.
