Living Underwater: The Actual Fountain Of Youth?

Good morning. The latest real estate construction boom may soon be at the bottom of the sea. At least it might be once word gets out that spending 100 days underwater can reverse your aging…by a decade.

Speaking of high effort/high reward, we worked out with Bear Grylls last Friday (it was wild), and we recently caught up with Christian Cooper, an ‘Extraordinary Birder’ with some pretty big goals.

Also: blue tide is cool, but red tide? You don’t want to mess around with red tide. Read on to find out why.

Is Living Underwater The Actual Fountain Of Youth?

Joseph Dituri is a University of South Florida professor, former U.S. navy diver, and expert in biomedical engineering. Also known as “Dr. Deep Sea,” Dituri recently locked himself in a 592-square-foot underwater research station in the Florida Keys for more than 100 days. His time underwater was spent conducting a variety of research, and one of his projects found that he scientifically reversed his own biological age clock by approximately 10 years.

What’s It Like Working Out With Bear Grylls?

In the early hours of Friday morning in London, we met up with Bear Grylls, ready to be put through the paces on an outdoors workout. By the time the class kicked off, it was already fully sunny and hot—creating the perfect conditions for a challenging, wildlife ranger-style workout to raise awareness for threats to conservation efforts throughout Africa. For about half an hour, we cycled through 45-second sets of burpees, push-ups, squat thrusts, weighted squats, resistance band squats, sit-ups, kettlebells, and turns on rowing machines, assault bikes, and ski ergs. It was certainly a challenge for a Friday morning and sounded intimidating when I first read about it. But throughout the class, we were reminded that we were all in it together, which kept me going. The trainers leading the class were firm with us yet also kind as they encouraged us all to push ourselves and get through just 15 more seconds, then 10, then 5…

You’re Going To Want To Avoid Mixing A Beach Day with Red Tide

Going to the beach is a quintessential summer activity. Unfortunately, nature doesn’t always cooperate. A phenomenon called red tide, also known as Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB), is one example of how nature can spoil your summer beach plans. In a red tide, algae grow out of control and produce toxins that are harmful to wildlife and humans. Though rare, red tide-born illness in humans can be debilitating and fatal.

Feeling Burnt Out At Work? Get Outdoors.

On the heels of a global pandemic, the workforce is now in the midst of a burnout epidemic, with three in four people saying they’ve experienced workplace burnout. The hustle culture is real, even in a post-COVID, work-from-home world. In fact, in many cases, working from home is adding to people’s feelings of being overworked and always on, which contributes to workplace burnout. Could nature be the antidote? If so, how do we get employers onboard?

A new study from Deloitte says 77% of respondents have experienced burnout at least once in their current job, and more than half of those respondents have experienced burnout more than once. Employers should care about this, because 91% say that burnout, stress, and frustration negatively impacts their quality of work, and this is true even when people like their jobs. For reference, 87% of Deloitte’s survey group claim to have a passion for their current work.

Workplace culture is part of the problem. One in four respondents say they never or rarely use their vacation days, and the study cites lack or support or recognition from leadership as the top drivers of workplace burnout.
