Kruger: The Crown Jewel of South Africa

In the untamed heart of South Africa, Kruger National Park, the big five (lions, leopards, elephants, buffalos, and rhinoceroses) roam freely across landscapes that stretch as far as the eye can see. One of South Africa’s crown jewels, this incredible nature park is renowned for its majestic beasts and breathtaking scenery.

Covering more than 7,000 square miles, nearly the size of the entire state of Massachusetts, Kruger is renowned for its incredible biodiversity, with over 148 species of mammals, 500 bird species, and 114 species of reptiles. In addition to cheetahs, hippos, crocodiles, and loads of antelope, Kruger is also home to unusual creatures, such as African wild dogs, elephant shrews, and southern ground hornbills.

From its journey to becoming a national park to hidden histories of the world’s oldest culture, Kruger is a fascinating place. Here are five facts you may not have known about Kruger National Park.

Hotels We Love: Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground

The mention of an RV resort may conjure up images of “roughing it,” but at Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground, that’s simply not the case. Complimentary Wi-Fi provides connectedness throughout the property, and two pools and spas ensure you can always stay cool. For entertainment, there’s a bocce ball court, and for cleaning, there’s a laundry facility. The cute on-site restaurant, Feather & Fire, serves up offerings like pizza and rotisserie chicken along with beer and wine at affordable prices. Plus, although there are plenty of places to park RVs, there are also trailers, cabins, cottages, and glamping tents here, meaning you don’t have to own an RV to stay.

Recipe: Grilled Pizza

Making your pizza party outside is a winning move.

The intense heat of a grill is significantly closer to -commercial pizza oven temperatures than what your indoor oven can achieve, producing a golden-brown pizza crust with flavorful grill marks in a matter of minutes.

Our pizza dough uses a tiny amount of yeast, a lot of water, and a long, 24-hour proof, which makes for an easy-to-stretch dough that bakes up thin, with small air bubbles. Stretching the dough on a generously oiled baking sheet makes it less sticky and helps it crisp up over the flames.

To make sure the toppings cook as quickly as the crust, you’ll prewarm the sauce and use a combo of fast-melting fresh mozzarella and finely grated Parmesan. It’s important to use ice water to prevent the dough from overheating in the food processor. This recipe works best with a high-protein bread flour such as King Arthur.

How To Find the Best Fall Foliage Near You

For many hikers, fall is the best season to get outdoors. You’re avoiding the wet weather in the spring and the heat from the summer, but you’re not dealing with the frozen temperatures of winter. Plus, the vibrancy of changing leaves sends many out the door to find fall foliage.

While there are obvious destinations like New England, the Smoky Mountains, and parts of the Pacific Northwest, almost every area has a seasonal change worth exploring.

Here are some helpful tips to figure out when you should go outside to find fall foliage in your area.

Flannel on Flannel on Flannel…

Fall is just around the corner, which means the leaves are changing and there’s a slight crispness in the air that wasn’t there before. Plus, pumpkin spice and apple-flavored everything is now available.

If you’re ready to get your fall vibes on while camping, you’re going to want to press add to cart on some of these items (or all, we won’t judge).
